The legacy of the the concept of "radical Islam"

Reader comment on item: The Middle East Forum Debates Moderate Islam

Submitted by Irving Weisdorf (Canada), Mar 30, 2014 at 11:18

Daniel, I've followed you and supported you now for over a decade and have great respect for you. But I feel that your position-- that there is such a thing as "radical Islam" and another thing called "moderate Islam", is an idea that has taken hold of a large segment of the discourse, and has been one of the major contributing factors to misunderstanding the nature of the war we are currently in.

It has also served to confuse our base, lead to inaction as a result of this confusion, and given our enemies the cover that it is only the "radical" Islamists who we have to worry about.

Raymond's clarity of thought is so very welcome and I hope that at some point in the future, it will be embraced by not only the Middle East Forum --and you deserve kudos for printing it and broadening the discussion--but by public opinion as well.

With best wishes,

Irving Weisdorf
