Mr. Berg argued similarlyReader comment on item: Moderate Islam: Western Ally or Western Myth? Submitted by Abu Nudnik (Canada), Dec 28, 2009 at 21:27 I remember the Israeli Mr. Berg arguing similarly. "There has to be peace. There has to peace because Israel needs peace like it needs air." Just because the West needs to believe there is a moderate and reformable Islam does not mean there is or will be. On the bright side, Islam started as a racial exercise in unity of the Arab tribes and then accepted non-Arabs as converts. So it has changed... or has it. Irshad Manji, devoted to changing Islam from within tells how, at a speech she gave she was jeered and then someone from the back of the gym stated that she, "a Paki" wasn't a true Muslim. The implication was obvious: that she couldn't be because she was Pakistani and not Arab. If that change was as skin deep as this story demonstrates, it's a question of maintaining a power balance and protecting ourselves from terrorism as best we can. But it's only one story.
