Returning to 9/10?

Reader comment on item: [Brandon Mayfield and] Preempt Terrorists, Or Not?

Submitted by Maurice (Israel), Oct 6, 2007 at 05:15

Americans (and even Israelis for that matter) are more into striking back only after an attack has occured.

This has happened many times and often results in even more serious counter attacks occuring afterwards as what happend with Israel's war with Hezbollah in JulyAugust 2006. Regarding America's most significant terror attacks, the ones on September 11, 2001, a lot of warnings including "chatter" by Arabic speaking people was picked up by both the CIA and other organizations, including the FBI. This information was not coordinated and acted upon largely because the various security and law enforcement agencies have been notorious for non-cooporation.

In the panic and frenzy that occured after 9/11, a number of innocent people, including Muslims and Israelis, were rounded up and held for periods up to six months before finally being released. In order not to "offend" the US Muslim community, President Bush tried to act as though it was only certain small groups of "radicals" who were cooporating with terror organizations like Al Qaeda.

Perhaps this is why so few people were actually indicted and convicted of what is still America's most violent act of terror commited against it to date. The dangers are now more possible than ever, especially with Iran so much in the picture.

It's more than just 9/10/2001. It's 1982 (relating to what happened in Lebanon with suicide bombings) as well and Dec. 6, 1941!
