to create a balance

Reader comment on item: Rethinking the Egypt-Israel "Peace" Treaty
in response to reader comment: I pose the question

Americans love checks and balances. They do not like an overly strong party, be it Israel or the Arabs. Looking at Martin Kramer, Israel is an asset to the US not as a force unto itself but as a balance versus the Arabs. This is the Pax Americana which has worked so beautifully in Europe. The occasional flareup is merely a proof that the balance works, as opposed to the Gulf where all hell breaks loose.

Since Israel's qualitative assets keep improving (education and technology) this balance is expected to work well into the future. The Jinx is atomics and screwy Islamics in Tehran or Bin Laden. days will tell if the US will reestablish the balance by putting the jinx back in the bottle, for when the genie breaks loose, gas will be a thousand dollars a barrel.
