Not Rivals: The Saudis attacked the US

Reader comment on item: [Saudi Arabia:] Not Friend or Foe

Submitted by Richard Stone (United States), May 17, 2002 at 20:41

At last I find a group of people who see what the US Government is taking pains to conceal, or avoid bringing into the open, which is that the attack on the US was planned by Saudis, financed by Saudis, and carried out primarily by Saudis. The US was attacked by Saudi Arabia.

The failure of the government of Saudi Arabia could be generously described as a failure to control its own territory and citizens, just as the other Arab governments cannot seem to control the various groups within their own borders. Or the failure could be seen more broadly as an inadequate and ineffective government in every way, which does not adequately serve its citizens (certainly a failure as to the female population) in preparing them to live and do well in the modern world. Or more broadly still, the government and regime could be seen as actively hostile to the US and Western interests, and using proxies to attack us.

How we interpret their actions will determine what we ought to do. I am not so sure they are a rival, because rivals do not attack one another, even through proxies.

In fact, we were attacked by Saudi Arabia, not Afghanistan. The war on terror is a sham and a deceit to the extent we ignore that reality.

Just as Bush has been trying to hide his foreknowledge of the potential for the specific attack on the US, he is trying to avoid having the US voters understand that the Saudis attacked us.
