Aside from cheap oil, the prime motivater for the US to support the the Saudi regime is that the opposition is much more radical and anti-American. And this seems to be true.

However, the Royal family may not be in power much longer. Looking at it from an historical perspective, the kingdom, regardless how stable it may seem, has much potential for upheaval.

More Saudis are embracing extremism, the economy is faltering, the population is growing, unemployment is at 30 % and the State media blames all its problems not on the regime, but on America and Israel.

This is a situation comparable to Western Europe just before the rise of Nazi Germany. And as they say, sometimes history repeats itself...
