Reader comment on item: Nation-building in Afghanistan, Iraq Was Never Going to Work

Dr Pipes,

Amazing insight - Such an analysis piece was long overdue in domestic and foreign policy intellectual circles.... Why didn't more people see this coming? Your suggestion for an Iraqi strongman was definitely correct but no one listened - to their own detriment. What a shame that 20 years later and a trillion dollars later in Afghanistan and same with Iraq that no one predicted what should have seemed obvious. I have insisted for a while that, short of winning a war 1945 style, that one can never hope to achieve the outcomes one desires. The whole effort was futile. Shouldn't someone be held accountable for such huge miscalculations? More discourse and awareness on this topic from people such as yourself and who have a platform such as yourself is required, I hope people will listen.

Israel victory is equally important but short of a 1945 style scenario I don't see how it can happen easily.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Thank you. As for Israel Victory: It is as important for Israel as Germany, Japan, etc. were for the United States in 1945. And the circumstances are not that different.
