Resentment and fear, out of nowhere

Yes, an attempt to exclude people at the border who are religiously inspired to murder other people in large numbers is indeed very difficult, or as you say, not workable. That's why it's important to err on the side of caution. If it can't be reliably determined that someone is not dangerous, then s/he should not be allowed into the country. Contrary to the claims of speakers in that spreading reaction, there is no right defined in the US Constitution for all Yemenis, or all Syrians, or anyone else in the world, to move to and live in the United States. However, the US government is obligated to protect its citizens. The fact that the US government largely ignored this most basic of its obligations for the last 16 years in no way removes it as a basic obligation.

"...populists will store resentment and fear of Muslims and immigrants first..."

Nazim, do you think, perhaps, if Muslims stopped driving large vehicles into crowds of people, if Muslims stopped shooting into crowds of people, stopped torturing people to death in concert halls, stopped blowing up crowded airports and trains and buses, stopped flying planes full of ordinary people into buildings full of ordinary people, all in the name of their faith, that that fear and resentment of Muslims might markedly decrease?

Who are the other immigrants for whom these populists store resentment and fear? There are thousands of Hindus in Denmark. Is virulent Hinduaphobia a rampant problem in Denmark? In the news every day? What steps is the Danish government taking to combat Hinduaphobia?

Violence and repression loom? I'm not sure about the repression, but the violence isn't looming. It's already arrived. From the middle east.
