Are your conclusions based on mere claims?

Reader comment on item: ISIS Is Not Islamic?

Submitted by Adeola (United Kingdom), Dec 10, 2016 at 01:12

In your words ...but I am not deciding anything, just listening to the claims made by ISIS and acknowledging them. More generally, if someone says he's Muslim, I take his word for it. Incidentally, If someone (e.g., Obama) says he's Christian, I take his word for it too. I am not in the business of judging theology or hearts.

So, the fact that ISIS or any other extremist group claim to be Islamic is what you're basing your judgement on right? why not research deeply into the what ISIS is claiming to belong to (Islam) before making conclusion, Mr Pipes? The Qur'an is the book that teaches Islam, why not grab a copy and read it in its entirety, and not just flipping through or scanning, deep reading with the aid of reliable commentaries.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Discussing whether ISIS is Islamic is like debating whether the pope is Catholic. Not really a useful undertaking.
