How do Arabs read inscriptions?

I happen to disagree with Dr. Pipes on this one. No sane Arab would read an Arabic text from bottom to top therefore this really means that the inscription on the flag can be read as Allah (is) the prophet of Muhammad

There is no doubt that the Islamic literary tradition realized that this is a linguistic disaster and we are told that Muhammad had a ring with the inscription on it and he used to sign letters while he was wearing the ring and we are supposed to believe that what will be on the letter is: Muhammad Rasul Allah when in actual fact this is no more than a lame excuse because if this is true then what we will get on the letter garbeld Arabic and it would be

HALLA

LUSAR

DMHM
