17% homosexual?

That 17% of Iranian students (apparently both male and female students were interviewed) identify as homosexual seems extraordinarily high, considering that homosexuals and bisexuals rarely amount to more than 3% of populations in the Western world. I suspect that a lot of the students were having fun with the interviewers. That would also cast doubt on the statistic of 80% of female students being sexually active.
One is reminded of the research that showed that Margaret Mead's "Coming of Age in Samoa" was similarly based on lies, though admittedly from a much smaller sample.

That is one possibility. Another is that the strictures against heterosexual intercourse encourage more homosexual activity.
