Dear Naushad, the difference is that we are trying to change these things. Even if they existed in the past, today there is a lot of acknowledgement that they were wrong and there is serious effort to remove them. Most modern Hindus live by the harmless values of their faith (we believe that there are many distinct paths to the same God, we see no harm in attaching symbols to God, etc....) and discard the harmful practices. This is a far cry from taking a hundreds of years old code and presenting it verbatim as the only word of God. And, that is perhaps why, our society --though not fastest growing-- is relatively more peaceful.
