Dear Dr Pipes:

Your reader Duard Hamm suggested that US should curtail all aids to the countries where terrorist acts against Americans are committed. I completely agree with the idea. But our resident apologist Mr Debanjan Banerjee stood up to challenge Mr. Hamm. Mr Banerjee repeated the beaten to death argument that teh US aid is given to the countries so they can buy (quoting Banerjee) "junk American military hardware". Banerjee must have heard about American University of Beirut. He might also have heard about other such universities in other Islamic countries.

Has Banerjee heard about thr $1.5 Billlion US civilian aid to Pakistan? Even if I grant to Banerjee that 100% of US aid to Islamic nations is to buy weapons, I suggest that US should not even give that aid. The saved money should be used to translate Plato, Aritotle, Russell, Adam Smith, Locke, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King into Arabic and distributing free translations to anyone who will care to read. I hope Banerjee understands.
