jail terrorists for security - unless they're in Israeli jails

This is of a piece with the authorities' hysteria over the breakout of terrorists in various prisons, yet the US administration has pressured Israel to free terrorists from Israeli prisons. There is an irrational and self-destructive psychosis flooding US actions, from counter-productive diplomacy to inept security policy.

However, it's not like we've ever been as indominatable as we like to delude ourselves. In grade school, I was taught that we fought the Barbary Pirates until we achieved freedom of the sea. Then as an adult, I did some reading & learned the truth. That was centuries ago, yet we once again have active and very successful piracy going on, and only belatedly, finally, way too late began to interdict those pirates & try to protect our shipping. We're not very good at acting rationally. Nor are any other humans.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Great point, which I have not seen anywhere, about the prison breaks vs. the pressure on Israel to release prisoners.
