Reader comment on item: On Closed Embassies, the Worldwide Travel Alert, and Wimpitude

Submitted by Steve (United States), Aug 5, 2013 at 11:19

Mr. Pipes,

I usually agree with you, but not on this one. There is a serious threat from the most dangerous Al Qa'ida affiliate, so it is a prudent precaution to close easy targets. Remember that the responsibility for embassy security is with the host government, and there are not military quick reaction forces within an hour of all these embassies. No one wants to be responsible for doing nothing in the face of a credible threat and then trying to explain it when people get killed.

Since we invaded Iran and Afghanistan, and have killed hundreds to thousands of Al Qa'ida operatives, the wimp label doesn't really apply. AQAP knows they are in the crosshairs.

The only bad thing now is that members of Congress are saying far too much in public about the nature of the intelligence and compromising sources and methods.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Deterrence is different from having quick reaction forces nearby.
