Salvation for the Palestinians

Reader comment on item: The Motives Behind Palestinian Leader's Effort to Gain Statehood at U.N.
in response to reader comment: A :"Palestinian State"?

Diary Extract, 07-25-02

When I was young, still in my mid-twenties at the end of

World War II, and for many years thereafter, I favored the

concept of two states, Palestinian Arab and Jew, living side by

side with each other in peace. Now I must tell you that … Arab

leaders have inbred such hatred into their psyches, that a fully

sovereign, Palestinian State of whatever inviolate borders

would only be a sanctuary for massive arms and terrorist attacks

upon Israel.

Administrative autonomy they can still have, reconstruction,

peace, happiness, prosperity, even and especially Israel's helping

hand…. Call it a state if you wish, but there will be no

sovereign Palestinian State, not at any rate a state with the

capacity to make war upon neighboring states, no state with

inviolate borders and the right to manufacture or import

unlimited arms…. Whether the only relatively recent dream

of a state will be forever lost remains to be seen, but the route to

it would be long…. I doubt that any man, woman, or child alive

today will live to see it. They — the Palestinians — have lost the

war. Understanding that is their only salvation.
