Reader comment on item: Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by Larry Hunter (United States), Sep 14, 2012 at 16:19

I'm not suggesting that your article is irrelevant. If the President has lied about his past, that is important. If they are lies, they seem to be limited to ones about his background. It might make him an imperfect person, even an imperfect candidate for the Oval Office.

But we elect people not saints. After serving the country for almost four years, I think your article is immaterial. He has not performed without error; I am troubled by some of the things he has done. But overall, he has worked hard for our nation. An independent group of 238 Presidential scholars have evaluated his performance using a variety of considerations and rated him the 15th best President.

The other candidate for the Office has something to prove. He left Massachusetts with the 47th worst job growth rate in the nation and $2.6 billion deeper in debt. He has offshore bank accounts and somehow managed to get over $100 million in his IRA. Romney's lies and those of his running mate are numerous and incredibly significant not only to his credibility but to all Americans. Perhaps his worst lie is that he would not raise taxes on the middle class and cut taxes for the riches, without cutting or curtaining critical services such as health care for the elderly. It can't be done according to the economists. So several years of his tax returns are a minimal thing to ask for, especially given the reasonable speculation that they might show felonies relating to tax fraud.
