Reader comment on item: Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by Jane (United States), Sep 14, 2012 at 06:48

I can think of many reasons why the president can't reveal in depth the confusion that was his childhood background. The bottom line is that we shouldn't care and it shouldn't matter. The man claims to be Christian so we should leave it at that. Do you believe he is a Manchurian candidate, some kind of Islamist plant or spy? We'd all be better off without this dirty campaign and all of this direct or implied filth. Makes me question the entire process of getting elected these days. ...

If you had only read the piece, you would know the answer to "So what?" Here it is, spelled out for you:

This is not to say that he was a practicing Muslim or that he remains a Muslim today, much less an Islamist, nor that his Muslim background significantly influences his political outlook (which, in fact, is typical of an American leftist). Nor is there a problem about his converting from Islam to Christianity. The issue is Obama's having specifically and repeatedly lied about his Muslim identity. More than any other single deception, Obama's treatment of his own religious background exposes his moral failings.
