Reader comment on item: Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by Art Altman (United States), Sep 14, 2012 at 04:56

Hi Daniel. You have not established that Obama ever "was a Muslim". Not even close. However, you have established something far more important: that he was raised with heavy exposure to Islam and cultural mindsets of Islamic countries. This can cut both ways. For example, it can provide useful insights in dealing with Muslim countries. Our military adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq now appear, in hindsight, quite naive.

How did this happpen? Arrogance? Ignorance? Obama greets Muslim crowds and leaders in a manner that demonstrates understanding of their culture. This is bad? (It might be if he shows excessive deference or, as you suggest, actually exaggerates to the point of dishonesty). But one also wonders -- and I think that this is what truly concerns you -- whether he is driven by a world view overly sympathetic to extreme Muslim views, and lacking empathy for Christian and Jewish concerns.

Dinesh made a similar mistake in his ridiculous film. Dinesh claims that Obama seeks to undercut the strength of the United States, even destroy it. He uses some pop psychology based on snippets of Obama's background. His over-reach is not necessary. He presents elements of Obama's background that are not well known, and that may be influencing his behavior. Interesting enough.
