European Union Disdain again

Reader comment on item: Israel is Winning

Submitted by Nora (Germany), Aug 11, 2002 at 11:51

"Is the hatred of Jews so sublime even in the Western countries that there is no outcry from citizens of democratic countries concerning these misspent funds? One should wonder."

I am German born and based and the only countries I know really well are my own and the UK and whereas antisemitism in the UK seems to be more or less part of the general British xenophobia, it's alive and kicking quite un-sublimely in Germany.

As the bitter saying goes, the Germans will never forgive the Jews for Auschwitz and they will never forgive the Americans for freeing them, too. It would be a field day for any psychoanalyst to go through the nauseating mixture of peace movement gobbledegook where "Afghanistan" stands for "Germany" and "Israel" stands for "Jews" and I think if I have to listen once more to the hackneyed phrase that "war has never solved anything" without being able to shout back "it damn well does! What about WWII?" I'll go stark barking mad.

The Middle East crisis has made anti-Semitism quite openly socially acceptable again in Germany. It now goes under the label "It must be possible to criticize the Jews" with the euphemism "Israel" for "Jews" having become obsolete already.
