Demand respect, and receive none

Reader comment on item: Admitting Censorship due to Islamist Intimidation
in response to reader comment: Respect #2

Satire is a way for society to keep from taking itself too seriously. If a religion sets itself to be untouchable by satire, it becomes an even greater target. I respect the Muslim who goes about his faith in a quiet manner which does not conflict with the way that I choose to live my life. I have no respect for a Muslim who says that I MUST do something. I disagree with the latter Muslim, I must only do what my conscience dictates.

I will mock the radical muslim, I will mock his faith, I will mock his god. I will respect the Muslim that respects my right to say and do as I please. allah is nothing to me. It is a name, So is Muhammad, I have met many people who have been named after that prophet, some are great people and some are dirtbags that will not receive respect. It is just a name to me, nothing more or less and it will only receive the respect that the individual deserves.

Islam is the little brother to Judaism, and around 500 years younger than Christianity. It is an invention by a guy who came along with some ideas about how things should be. It is about as legitimate as scientology or Mormonism. Telling me that I have to respect an invented belief, is like telling me that I have to respect people who tell me that the world is only 6000 years old. I simply find it to be a challenge.
