Back when I was in college, (late 80's)I dated an arab man (Saudi). I am African-American so I was very surprised to know of the shame that came to the family because he was black. I knew many, many muslims from every country and they were all very accepting of all races. I feel so sad for Tina and those that truly loved her.
However, when the boyfriend and I were talking, the subject of rape came up. He said if someone raped a female in the family, she would have to be killed. The look of horror that must have been on my face made him laugh and say that he was joking. That was my first time hearing of this (honor killings)and have since read about a lot of such cases (sad but true). This cannot be a part of the peace loving Islam that I came to know and respect but there are large numbers of muslims that believe this...Sad, but true. Sometimes it is very hard to get rid of deeply embedded cultural ways (FGM for instance) no matter how harmful they seem to other cultures..
