A Rational Perspective

Reader comment on item: Does the [New York] Police Department Profile? Should It?

Submitted by John McClain (United States), Jun 14, 2006 at 09:03

Dear Mr. Editor, I have been waiting a long time for someone to address this issue with a rational mind. Only an idiot or a professor could possibly consider "profiling" as anything but a useful tool. The fact that it can be misused has no bearing on it, every tool man has ever designed has had the potential for misuse, ask any mechanic what he does to people who borrow a screwdriver to use as a lever, just don't expect the response to be rated "G".

Any declaration to the contrary only shows the ignorance ...
