Reader comment on item: Away with Crucifixes, Crosses, and Christmas

Submitted by Lil (United States), May 8, 2006 at 15:36

I really don't understand why activist Muslims in supposedly secular states are made the bad guys in this post. Jews have a long history in the U.S. of advocating the separation of church and state, and demanding the removal of Christian religious symbols from tax-funded public space. As someone from a Christian/Jewish interfaith family background, I strongly support this separation of religious symbols from the secular. Although the problem is not something I spend time protesting, I empathize with the concerns of those who don't want Christian symbols representing them during their schooling or employment, etc. I am indeed concerned about the movements of radical Muslims in Western countries that threaten their secular and democratic aspects. That's one reason I'm confused by this post. It seems to be an effort to turn the inappropriate objections by a few Christians to the supposed threat to Christian symbolism away from Jews and toward Muslims.
