Are We Safe?Reader comment on item: Are We Safer? Submitted by Debbie Wallis Landau (United States), May 1, 2002 The previous complacency of our government and citizens is appalling. I believe that your assessment of government officials' unwillingness to identify what they call "terrorism" correctly as the thrusts of militant Islam, is partly to blame......coupled with its continunal placating of Saudi Arabia and certain Mid-East govts....andLACK OF BACKBONE IN GENERAL. Memory is too short. Lebanon is not even a miniscule part of the American vocabulary. Munich Olympics, the movie "Hostages", etc. Why, if 'ordinary' citizens know that only 3% of our oil comes from the Gulf region, does the government tread so carefully with the Saudis? Why does the charade of 'friendship' continue? I keep remembering that line Maximus uttered in Gladiator a year and a half ago: "The time for half-measures is over!" Mais, oui!!!!
