Is this part of his culture?

No it is not part of his culture. More so, it seems to be part of yours. You are looking for any excuse and/or reasons because you can't move on. Maybe that is why he felt that you were suffocating him. He has finished the relationship and you are having a hard time accepting this. You met when you were young and people change as they mature. You need to grow up as well.
