Reader comment on item: Canada's Muslims, Not of One Mind
in response to reader comment: Some of the Shari'a law in Islam (commandments)

Submitted by the Grand Infidel of Kaffiristan (Australia), Dec 12, 2011 at 07:28

Mr Slayhy writes a long but partial list of some of the sharia laws - making it slightly more palatable to his reader base by leaving out the more onerous and barbaric ones. Presenting 'islam-lite' ( "Same Great Allah--Less Jihad") but leaving out the rest is a not unexpected but well-worn and false and misleading tactic .

Notice there's no mention of accepting the caravan raider as the last 'prophet' , or bowing and scraping to Mecca 5 times a day, amputations for property crimes . Indeed we find the most merciful Burak rider himself recommended limb amputation as a remedy for theft of objects. His sojourn into medicine with the flywing remedy hadn't really taken off - so he's tried his hand at jurisprudence - leaving muslims with wonderful gems such as '. (The Apostle said) : Kill those who change their religion. — Sunan Abu Dawud, Book XXXIII, Kitab al-Hudud

Other more obscure and exotic recommendations - such as shaving pubic hair or entering a toilet with the left foot first or was it the right one??) etc go hand in hand with the cult philosophy though may not be sharia requirements. Perhaps Mr Slayhy could enlighten us on these finer points of 'law'.

Why is islam's set of legalistic requirements so complicated? All of the most relevant items suggested in Mr Slayhy's list are covered in the much simpler Judeo-Christian 10 Commandments.

The development of the legal system in the West has been a hard-fought battle from its beginnings in Roman military law - with significant milestones in English Habeus Corpus and the 13th century Magna Carta and German Town law , the separation of Church and State. It for the most part is fair and equitable - based on generations of people sorting out the true from the false, the just from the unjust in the the cut and thrust of often harsh realities.

It is quite amusing to find muslims misplaced in the West (and their helpers) trying to offer the medieval arab-based Sharia as any sort of viable alternative for the complexities of modern living.
