I believe you have a disturbed sources

Here is the story

The Verses of the Quran were written during Muhammads life time, because who cannot write or read, he ordered his followers to write every verse sent to him By the Lord and told them the location of each where it should be placed in the Quran as Archangel Gabriel told him from his Lord where it should be located.

His followers used different material to write the verses and kept them in safe place

A full Quran was compiled during Muhammad time and kept under his wife's custody (Hafsa) The daughter of the Great Caliph Omar bin Khattab.

In that era the Arabs were famous in memorizing, they competed in poetry and they were eloquent speakers.

They memorized the whole of the Quran by heart. Muhammad wife Aisha was young and memorized the whole Quran by heart, all his followers memorized the Quran by heart. Aisha lived after Muhammad 42 years and she was authority in Quran and its interpretations as well as the saying of Mohammad, she memorized almost 3000 sayings and deeds of Muhammad. The people come to her for inquiries. many of Muhammad's friends were authority in quran and Hadith (Sayings)

When Othman (The third Caliph) wanted to compile the Quran, he ordered all fragments to be collected and verses from all followers who were trusted writers and grouped the verses according to Muhammad sayings the location whereof. and he compiled them in one book and ordered the writers to right it in good proper Arabic to be read well everywhere. this process took sometime to check the authenticity of the person and the iteration of many followers of the same information to make sure that it is right.

Then he order Hafsa to bring the copy she had (during Muhammad times) to compare it with what they wrote, it tallied, he returnd the Quran copy to her and ordered his followers to distribute the first fully checked version of the Quran for the first time and that was less than 20 years since Muhammad death. (which is a short time and many of Muhammad friends and followers (who lived during his time) were still alive.

Below site will give you information how God promised to preserve his book
