Reader comment on item: Niqab Security Outrages at Airports

Submitted by David (United States), Aug 10, 2010 at 13:54

As an Orthodox Jew, my wife covers her hair. At times she has forgotten to remove the metal clips she wears in her hair under the wig, and has set off the metal detectors. When she explains the situation, she is taken to a private area where she removes her wig and is 'wanded' by a female security agent.

I doubt that the private room is there just to accommodate Orthodox Jewish women. Airport security is set up with a private area in case a more thorough body search is necessary. It is thus a simple matter to utilize the already existing private room to accommodate a person's religious requirements, or sense of modesty.

I would think that any women who cannot show her face in front of men can be brought to that same private room - that already exists- and uncover her face in front of a female security agent.

This is a simple accommodation to a person's religious requirements, without exempting anyone from normal security requirements, and with only minimal extra effort.
