Two Questions for Dr. Pipes

Reader comment on item: Faisal Shahzad, Jihadi, Explains Terrorism

Submitted by Aymenn Jawad (United Kingdom), Jun 25, 2010 at 08:30

Dr. Pipes:

1. It's all very well pointing out (rightly) the Obama administration's denial of Islamist motivation for terrorist acts, but how does this translate into actual policy? Do we do what Faisal Shahzad wants in terms of those demands listed above? Or do you have something else in mind?

2. Do you think Faisal Shahzad is being sincere when he says he decided to carry out these actions simply as Islamist-motivated retaliation, or do you think his real motivation is to impose Islamic law on non-Muslims?

Daniel Pipes replies:

1. We explicitly focus counterterrorism efforts on Muslims.

2. I think both your alternatives amount to the same thing.
