That's what Pipes is--realism personified. Not that there is no hope whatsoever. But that list of adjectives said it all...depressed, despondent, melancholic, etc. People will still repeat this "truism"..."the surge worked." Oh, really? Definitively? Even Charles Krauthammer, at the time, opposed the surge in Iraq, knowing full well all that Pipes knows and predicts.
