The decline of Rationalism and the rise of Islamism seems, in hindsight, predictable.
Western Liberalism was given a serious, if not fatal, blow on 9/11. No longer is the paradigm of class struggle valid. There is no synthesis if the thesis is kill or be killed.
The reaction to dismantle the Islamist symbols, monitor radical mosques, registration of practioners of Islamism, close monitoring of the Imams, mullash, even the internment of populations are rational responses to a clear and present danger.
Liberalism offeres no rational alternative, only the French solution of capitulation. Russia may lead the way,
