Depressing scenario

Reader comment on item: Is the Middle East "Freer, More Hopeful, and More Promising"?

Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (United States), Dec 7, 2008 at 02:44

All these things may be true but seeing them in written form is certainly depressing. What the US has seemed to gain is notoriety in the world, but not respect. The Middle East certainly has changed during the Bush administration, and I also agree that all the changes have not been positive ones. Egypt is one example. During the ten years I lived there (1996 - 2006) the niqab and hijab made a startling resurgence in popularity, a sign that some Egyptian Muslim women were becoming more, not less, Islamic. We in the West look upon such covering up as lack of freedom. One wonders how President Bush could make such a statement about a freer Middle East without blushing.
