Reader comment on item: Uniting to Exclude Saudi Arabian Airlines

Submitted by Ken Bumgarner (Saudi Arabia), Aug 21, 2007 at 16:31

Sir;

As a practicing Christian (as was my Mother who recently died here in Saudi Arabia) who has lived and worked in Saudi Arabia for over 18 years I can tell you categorically that your interpretation of the law and regulations are in error.

I have been allowed my Bible, Mother was permitted hers as are many other Christians. We are permitted to worship God in a manner of our own choice (permitted in the Koran as Allah gave all men free choice). That we who do worship as Christians do not do so openly in deference to the law and culture is not any hardship. I would never flaunt my Christianity in their faces any more than I would eat in public during the Islamic Holy month of Ramadan.

Yes, there are misguided fanatics here too, just as there are radical fanatics in Christianity in the United States - but those here do not represent the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) any more than the fanatic Christians represent Jesus. Jesus would not have agreed with the actions of these people any more than he did with the scribes and pharisses of his day.

I can tell you with certainty that the vast majority of Saudi Muslims and members of the Royal family with whom I have dealt truly believe their faith and practice their faith in truth and in peace with no ill will toward anyone.

I have been often ashamed of the media and deplorable statements and actions of supposed Christians and Christian leaders... but let me remind you of a single thought before you start again to cast anyone in a bad light - "He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone." Jesus Christ, CE31 approximate.

Daniel Pipes replies:

My "interpretation of the law and regulations are in error"? The regulations are clear. If they are not always applied, that is good news but not terribly good or surprising news, especially as pertains to American expatriots.
