Reader comment on item: A Strongman for Iraq?

Submitted by Mark Smith (United States), Apr 28, 2003 at 12:27

I agree with Mr. Pipes. I don't see an alternative to leaving Iraq on its own, we would just end up fighting another dictatorship down the road. What would be the feasibility of getting all of the Middle Eastern countries involved in finding a ruler and setting up a government? They could even put some forces in Iraq as part of an "Islamic peace coalition" until the government gained enough strength on its own. You would think it would be in their best interest to maintain peace in that area. Even though they have different governments and religious fervor, you would at least think they could move a new government into place faster than Western countries since the U.S. is probably feared in the Islamic world. The U.S. and its allies would have to stay for a time and maintain the goal of creating a democracy, however, but they could be on the back-side of it militarily.
