Lack of history sense

Reader comment on item: A Strongman for Iraq?

Submitted by Neil Abramson (United States), Apr 30, 2003 at 11:45

Pipes is of course correct as usual. The only sucessful example was Attaturk in
bringing Turkey into the modern secular world and he was the very model of the
strong man.He was in his time admired by the populace and left his mark that exists
today in the modern Turkish state!

Radical change provides the discontinuity that well organized groups use to take over power such as the French Revolution, certainly
the Russian Revolution Perhaps this is why Orwell said all revolutions fail!

To aspire that anglo saxon notions of parlimentary democracy can willy nilly be imposed on
a state that has never known it, is illusory. The left`s world view being tatters is waiting
to call the present conflict a failure if [it already has]

Colin Powell seems to personify failure: his diplomacy has has never worked; it has been the only consistency
in his term in office. In spite of this, his value and only value is as a show piece to the
third world.

His only rival in failure is Annan of the now irrelevant U.N.
