Reader comment on item: Why the Left Loves Osama [and Saddam]

Submitted by Bettina Camcigil (United States), Mar 20, 2003 at 15:31

Dear Mr. Pipes,

... Though some of the anti-war demonstrators or those opposed to war in Iraq may indeed be academics with scholarly tendencies towards Marxism, I very much doubt that the millions of antiwar demonstrators you refer to in your article have any knowledge of Marxism or the politics of the left. By grouping all of us opposed to the Bush administration's war-mongering into a certain "undesirable" category, you and the White House attempt to make it easier for yourselves to ignore the overwhelming opposition of the general public around the world to this war.

... I am totally un-political - not on the left, not on the right, and generally not interested in politics at all. I find it very disappointing, however, that after thousands of years of civilization, after trying out numerous political and social ideologies over the centuries, after developing complex laws and judicial systems, after achieving unimaginable feats of science and technology, the only solution adopted for resolving conflicts at the international level remains war. In this regard, we have not progressed one step further than the empires of early history. All that has changed are the weapons used in wars.
