Nihilism replaces Idealism

Reader comment on item: Why the Left Loves Osama [and Saddam]

Submitted by Richard Zuma (United States), Mar 19, 2003 at 09:07

With the blatant failure of the Left’s ideals, the only thing that remains is their hatred - a hatred for Individualism, Capitalism and the essential values of the West. Their desire to destroy our values is an end in itself. This is pure nihilism. It is a hate that they share with fundamentalist Islam.

Who would have thought that the Left would come to the aid of a religious movement? Marx must be turning over in his grave! Forget 'workers', 'industrial stages', 'atheism', 'historical dialectic', and 'materialism' - all one needs is a fundamental pervasive hate and the will to destroy the achievements of others.

The New Left led the way with the view of ‘action now’ directed against the establishment coupled with a vague notion of alternatives that would be firmed upon assumption of power. The Soviet ideal was already dreary. Now no pretense of an alternative is needed. Only the hatred is left.
