in response to reader comment: Origins of PC??

Submitted by raheel khokhar (United Kingdom), Oct 14, 2006 at 17:08

Dear Kevin M ,

oh please, the whole world and his wife knows that political correctness began in the eighties in the US, probably as an offshoot of Affirmative Action. I can't prove it, it's now part of the culture, but go to a university and ask a teacher of social sciences.

The brits you talk about probably don't even know of PC's origins. The vast majority of educated people here speak of the PC disease that has infected our society, where you can't say anything for fear of offending someone. I think it all began in the US when black people began to resent being called BLACK, and wanted to be refered to as African Americans, not that theres anything wrong with that, but it's a slippery slope, etc.

Regards, Raheel
