.... I am intrigued by your long held maxim that "moderate" islam is the solution. If the moderates are only able to steer clear of jihad warfare by selectively ignoring suras of the quran, how do they justify that stance, in light of the generally accepted islamic tenet that the book is the immutable word of God, miraculously preserved and eternally applicable? Does this indicate that you are re-evaluating your previous confidence in the moderates, or is there something subtle I am missing?

No, I am reporting the Pentagon analysis, not giving my views.

I see things more like the Egyptian intellectual Hassan Hanafi, who said recently that the Koran "is a supermarket, where one takes what one wants and leaves what one doesn't want." On this, see Agence France Presse, "Egyptian academic wades into troubled waters."
