This is the crux. Islam does not recognize Jewish sovereignty. It is a blasphemy. it is a cosmic aberration never to be tolerated. Once you realize that you solve the puzzle, including Ahmadinijad's statements. In a way he is worse than Hitler, whose initial goal was to rid Europe of Jews by Emigration. Ahmadinija'ds goal is to toast them, thermo-nuclear wise. I do not see anyone really dissuading him from his action.
