Reader comment on item: Hold Damascus Responsible [for Hezbollah Violence in Southern Lebanon]
in response to reader comment: Help me out here: What's in it for Syria?

Submitted by LDC (United States), Aug 1, 2006 at 17:09

Why, then, would poor, isolated Syria continue its intransigent belligerence toward Israel and any peace process?

I can think of several reasons:

  1. Habit - it's all they know
  2. Stay on good terms with Iran (Why? Cause Syria doesn't have oil and cause Iran will emerge as the ruling power in the Middle East. Why? Cause the US and UN are going to dink around long enough for the Mullahs to make a bomb or two. Why? You tell me.)
  3. Keep their peoples' attention diverted away from their failing country and, consequently, keep the tall eye doctor and his dad's lackys on the gravy train, such as it is.
  4. Hate is their reason for existence. What would they do without Jews to hate.
  5. Cause their Baathists, and how much intelligence does that take?
  6. Cause if they cross Iran, the Baathists are toast. How much would it take for Hezbulloh to target Syria.

Enough reasons?
