Through "Moralism" we are all hosed

Reader comment on item: Hold Damascus Responsible [for Hezbollah Violence in Southern Lebanon]

Dr Pipes,

An excellent strategic suggestion going after Syria and thus cutting off the major route supplying Hezbollah with its rockets and logistical aid.

You have however in writing your article pointed out the one major flaw in this strategy which would almost certainly be the end result of its adoption. Israel would most undoubtedly be accused of escalating the conflict. This is another dimension of the Moralism that has consumed and rendered strategically impotent every secular and liberal society in the west.

The "white anting" of our society has been going on for some time. Since the 1960s it has been impossible to find a military solution to any conflict. Other cultures which embrace wholeheartedly the primacy of political violence and the principle that states are maintained by power and not morality have expanded to fill the ever increasing gap generated by our cultural and demographic retreat. For example the "war on terror" which is always given the prefix in the media of "so called" is a comparatively recent phenomenon and will wane with the shifting of public opinion - war weariness is an ever present factor in a democracy - victories must be quick and cheap.

How can such a society stand up to one that teaches its children to embrace the glory of conflict and rejoice in smiting their enemies? Hezbollah is the ultimate expression of this culture. Tens of thousands of fearless indoctrinated warriors dedicated to bringing annihilation first to the Jews and then to the Lebanese Christians (whose bishops and cardinals so often can be seen on TV towing the line with Lebanese Islamic clerics almost apologising for their own identities and faith). Fueling the confidence of these extremists is the 30 years of floundering, retreat and surrender that preceded the war on terror - during which Yasir Arafat was given a Nobel peace prize in the same year he Authorised vicious attacks on Palestinian Christian women.

On the domestic front whilst our own people embrace pacifism and communal values an increasingly reactionary muslim population wins ever growing franchise with violence and misinformation as their tools. Proud of their identity the Islamists are able to shout down the neoconservative west who are forced to be profusely apologetic about their own identities by the disease of self recrimination imposed on them by modern PC left wing multiculturalism. We are after all in this skewed philosophy the inheritors of an evil and worthless society how can we then stand up and defend it?

This makes me think naturally of Belial a consort of the Devil in Judeo-Christian mythology who sought to imprison his victims with guilt. No talk is ever heard of the disgraceful state of human rights accorded religious minorities in Islamic societies or of the numerous whitewashed genocides committed in the name of Islam (which are in many Islamic countries celebrated events). Why does the media not focus on Hezbollah's treatment of the Maronite Christians? Are we to believe that they are merely responsible for constructing schools and hospitals and only fire these rockets in "self defense".

The handful of countries that have chosen to react to the Islamist threat pursue through questionable theatres of overt war whilst they are slowly covertly eroded from the inside. We are the warmongers and hatemongers according to those who preach the very philosophy of hate that has spawned this 1400 year old conflict and our media supports them in bringing this message to the population.

If you want a solution for Israel's problems then it could more accurately be found in rejection of the failed strategy of limited war and a return to the good old days of total warfare where bird dogging a superior opponent was so suicidal it would be unthinkable. If Lebanese Muslims wish to found an organisation dedicated to the destruction of a democratic state and the genocidal annihilation of its people then let them live and die in rubble and fear to look at the sky.

Cordially,

Reuben Horne.
