Reader comment on item: Hold Damascus Responsible [for Hezbollah Violence in Southern Lebanon]

Submitted by Abu Nudnik (Canada), Aug 1, 2006 at 20:52

Right on Mr. Pipes! Israel's greatest mistake came when, in 1967, they were five miles from Damascus and accepted an armistice. They should have declared they not would accept anything less than unconditional surrender; they should have fought until they got it or Damascus lay in ruins. Had the Israelis shown such strength 39 years ago, much suffering could have been averted on all sides. Palestinians would no longer live in a stateless condition in immigration camps throughout the Arab world, and the whole eastern Mediterranean could have concentrated on improving the well-being of states from Turkey to Egypt instead of wasting lives, sunk deep inside a psychotic annihilationist fantasy.

Yes, there is a risk; Iran has threatened to come to Syria's defence and they quite possibly will. But if they do, they'll do so alone. The USA doesn't have airstrips on both sides of Iran for nothing. I say put the heat on. This is the Rubicon moment in the war on terror. As Osama bin Laden says, when they see a strong horse, they'll want to back it. Time to saddle up, Israel!
