The Saudi Family: Friends, Foes and Undecideds

Reader comment on item: Government for Sale [to the Saudis]

Submitted by Perry (United States), Dec 3, 2002 at 15:47

An important point which is often missed by many western observers is that the Saudi Family is a complex and fractionated ruling family in the middle east. There is currently a power struggle going on within the Saudi Family as to who will dominate Saudi Arabia over the next several decades. I believe that the US and Western Governments have been attempting to bolster the pro-western and anti-terrorist factions in the country by attempting to deal with internal power struggles which result in incidents such as funding of terrorists, through diplomatic means in order to avoid insulting or embarrassing friendly factions there. The future of Saudi Arabia is a very sensitive political issue, and I hope that unlike Libya, which MI6 and the CIA gave away to Colonel Qaddaffi, we are able to deal with these very complex problems in a more intelligent manner.
