The case of Iran: Mossadegh, Khomeini, and the Left

Interesting read. Thanks. Two remarks:

1. Khomeini's hatred against the US was in partly due to the CIA's meddling into the Iranian affairs when the democratically elected Premier Mossadegh was toppled and the Western puppet Shah was installed in 1953.

2. Furthermore Khomeini is on the other hand the best example that Islamism and Western Leftism can't be bedfellows. Iranian Leftists first supported Khomeini, only to be killed or jailed afterwards.

Daniel Pipes replies:

1. Khomeini's hostility to the United States pre-dated and ran far deeper than the events of 1953.

2. Generally, in Muslim-majority countries, Islamists and leftists fight. Elsewhere, however, they have learned to cooperate quite effectively.
