Reader comment on item: Is Turkey Going Islamist?

Submitted by Howard Veit (United States), Jun 10, 2005 at 10:58

This guy's past is one of hard core Islamism. He was PM once before and he tried to build mosques and madrassas with public funds; he tried to make an alliance with terrorist Lybia; he sponsored Hate America rallies in the country, etc.

I think he's a hard line Islamist who may find that route temporarily unwise. We have to look at the people he has appointed to the minor ministries, apparatchiks in various departments, and what is going on in the countryside. If the EU rebuffs Turkey, they will go Islamist.

Daniel Pipes replies:

No, you are confusing Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with Necmetting Erbakan, the Islamist prime minister in 1996-97.
