I've been making the same observations about Turkey

Reader comment on item: Is Turkey Going Islamist?

Submitted by Madhur Sharma (India), Jun 7, 2005 at 09:15

After the arrival of the AKP, Turkey's military and intelligence relations with Israel have cooled off considerably. Turkey's citizens are on the same wavelength as European's dislike towards Israel. I don't know if there is Saudi influence on the Turks but rather than going secular, militant islam is gaining a toe-hold there. Jews and Christians 5-8 years back wouldn't think twice about staying in Istanbul but now they try to keep their presence muted because they don't feel safe anymore. Since the people elected the AKP, they will ultimately pay the price for giving impetus to militant islam. Hopefully, the Europeans have enough spine to keep Turkey out of the EU.
