Michael S writes:

"...more, in some cities, than they inflicted with nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

which cities would they have been in which more were killed than in the 2 Japanese cities attacked with atomic bombs??

re Dresden:

"...An independent investigation commissioned by the city council in 2010 reported a minimum of 22,700 victims with a maximum total number of fatalities of 25,000."

re Hamburg:

"...In direct comparison with the bombing of Hamburg in 1943, which created one of the greatest firestorms raised by the RAF and United States Army Air Force,[11] killing roughly 50,000 civilians in Hamburg and practically destroying the entire city,"

"...We in the West probably have the worst track record of any civilization, of pointing fingers at others while practicing those very things and worse ourselves..."

The thing is we are alive NOW. We have no control over what our ancestors did or did not do - but we can and do learn from the body of knowledge we inherited from them. By any measure - what has been handed down to us is more practical and produces greater real progress and more equitable outcomes than the knowledge handed down by arabs to their descendants.

"....When a Muslim extremist publicly executes someone, though, people are aghast -- not because the victims are innocent (which they generally are) of any crime, but because the majority of Westerners are appalled by capital punishment itself."

That's just your opinion yet you are presenting it as fact.

So in MY opinion , you are closer to the point in your first explanation - that the victims have committed no crime and are innocent - yet are being painfully slaughtered in the most barbaric way, like animals - by sub-humans for what they consider to be valid reasons - i.e. hatred - or for or just for the hell of it.

Yes, I actually DO see these ISIS clowns as sub-humans. Just because they can walk and talk and use their minds to plot evil deeds does not qualify them as being real people. They have lost their humanity. having had it taken over by something else - so please don't come back with any 'all people are equal crap' . Your exhortations will fall on deaf ears. There is a line and they've crossed it.

p.s. Australia is not a 'largely socialst country'.
