Reader comment on item: Republicans and Democrats Look at the Arab-Israeli Conflict

Submitted by Anon (United States), Oct 16, 2010 at 18:40

Raw numbers are misleading but the important thing is to understand the reasons somebody supports Israel. I am a liberal but I am also a strong Israel supporter but my support for Israel is based on the fact that Israel is a beacon for human rights and democracy. Israel is a tolerant, civilized country that respects all religions and has earned its place among civilized countries. It is also among the top when it comes to technological innovation and the world needs more Israels. All this despite the terrifying cloud that hangs over Israel in a neighborhood of Arab countries that want nothing more than the total annihilation of Israel.

However the Fox news and Tea party crowd who support Israel do so mostly for religious reasons and this is not healthy in the long run. Similarly liberals who oppose Israel because conventional liberal thought tends to side with the underdog is a misguided view.

Let us all support Israel for the right reasons but not because some 2000 yr old fairy tale book tells us so.
